Suite for Four Horns and Strings (Two Violins and Bass or Two Oboes and Bassoon) in F Major, TWV 55:F11

This is the first of seven Suites edited and published by Richard Dunn, which are distinct from the ten Quintets for Winds. Contemporary copies and original manuscripts in the libraries of Darmstadt, Dresden, and Rostock were consulted to prepare this series for publication. This “Programmatic” Suite in F, part of the Serenata TWV 13:6, was first performed on June 4, 1725, and includes unusual extra-musical descriptions for ten of the eleven dance movements.

  1. Ouverture
  2. Der canonierende Pallas (The canonic Pallas)
  3. Das Älster Echo (Echo of the Magpie)
  4. Die Hamburgischen Glocken Spiele (Play of the Bells of Hamburg)
  5. Der Schwanen Gesang (Song of the Swans)
  6. Die Älster, Schäffer Dorff Music (The village music of the Magpies and Swains)
  7. Die concertierende[n] Frösche und Krähen (The concertizing Frogs and Crows)
  8. Der jauchzende Pan (The rejoicing Pan)
  9. Der frohlockende Peleus (The exulting Peleus)
  10. Der ruhende Pan (The resting Pan)
  11. Der Schäffer und Nymphen eilfertiger Abzug (The hurried departure of the nymphs and swains)
